#20 A New Vintage Song!

Hi my dearies! Would you like to add one more lovely song to your playlist? Then listen to and enjoy this one Neil Diamond Solitary Man. I really love it!
And a few technical moments, of course. Could you read the lyrics and think about the following questions:)) Write you suggestions in the comments section!
1. Why does the singer use the word mine (not my) in Belinda was mine. (not Belinds was my.)
2. A phrasal verb that means to appear.
3. A word that you use when you agree with someone.
4. An adjective that means single, lonely.
5. What happened to Melinda and Sue?
6. What resolution does he make in the song?

Nomophobia

The study indicated that stress levels induced by the average case of nomophobia are similar in severity to ‘wedding day jitters’ and trips to the dentists. Ten percent of those questioned said they needed to be contactable at all times because of work. It is, however, arguable that the word ‘phobia’ is misused and that in the majority of cases it is only a normal anxiety. More than one in two nomophobes never switch off their mobile phones. The study prompted two editorial columns authored by those who minimize their mobile phone use or choose not to own one at all, treating the condition with levity or outright disbelief.

Are you a nomophobe or not?  What do you think about it? Is it widespread in our country or not?

A Brief History Of Suntan

  • A few years ago a white skin was very popular. White-skinned  people were very rich and they didn't work outdoors.
  • In the ХVII century people used white lead powder, chalk, and creams to lighten their skin tone. The chalk was diluted with an egg white and some vinegar.
  • Coco Chanel introduced the fashion for tan. She got seriously burnt on a cruise to Cannes in 1923.
  • Perfumer Jean Patou  invented the first oil for tanning in 1927.

ABOUT MUSIC...

My favorite bands is The Beatles and Scorpions. I like the sense of their songs. When I have a bad mood, I include it on my laptop. Most of all I like the song "LET it be" and "Wind of Change".

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
I think this song taught to accept life as it is.
Everything in this world is not casual. Each event teaches us something.

Next song talks about the winds of change, change in the world. I think it is very relevant today.

#18 On Long Sentences!

Hi English learners! Do you like posts with common mistakes? Today is time for some more:)
A common mistake we are going to discuss here is making your sentences too complicated. Your English sentences are sometimes so complicated that even a teacher can`t understand what you mean:) Long sentences usually have very many mistakes. The longer the sentence, the greater the chance it will have many mistakes:)
If you want to check whether you make this common mistake or not, take a piece of your writing and read it. If a sentence takes up nearly a whole paragraph, be sure it is exactly what I mean here. It is a complex sentence with many clauses and structures and everything that makes it impossible to understand and sounds very weird and strange.
I once came across a sentence that had nearly 10 lines! Would you be able to understand what the author meant? And can you imagine how many mistakes that piece of writing had! I didn`t even count them:)
My advice is BREAK A LONG SENTENCE INTO SIMPLE SENTENCES. It will save you many troubles, I promise:) This tip is not only for writing, but for speaking as well!
Here I would like to introduce some structures that help to make your English sentences correct, easy and listener-friendly. Remember that we say:
let sb. do sth. (e.g. Let me have a look at that letter.)
make sb. do sth. (e.g. I don`t like my parents because they make me study English.
I like him because he makes me laugh)
want sb. to do sth. (e.g. My parents want me to study English.)
As you can see, we don`t need any that-clauses here. We simply use an object+verb after let, make and want. NOTE that in the last sentence (with want) we need to before a verb.
I hope this little tip was helpful and you will make fewer mistakes when speaking English!

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Today the weather is very changeable, so I decided to write about the symptoms of flu and  cold.
                                    Symptoms
All types of flu have similar symptoms. Although the flu and common cold have similar symptoms, the flu tends to be more severe.
Symptoms graphic
FLU SYMPTOMS
FLU TEST
  • Flu symptoms include a fever, body aches, tiredness, and cough.
  • Your health care provider can give you a test to determine whether or not you have the flu.

Do I have the flu or a cold?

The flu and the common cold have similar symptoms. It can be difficult to tell the difference between them. Your health care provider can give you a test within the first few days of your illness to determine whether or not you have the flu.
In general, the flu is worse than the common cold. Symptoms such as fever, body aches, tiredness, and cough are more common and intense with the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose.

How to Make Easy Valentines Day Cards

Valentine’s Day

Every February 14, across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint, and where did these traditions come from? Find out about the history of this centuries-old holiday, from ancient Roman rituals to the customs of Victorian England.

The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.
Authors, poets and playwrights have been trying to capture love in words for thousands of years. Their work speaks to the enduring power of love across the ages of human history. Check out this collection of quotes about love from some of the world’s most famous romantics, from Shakespeare, who wrote 154 sonnets dealing with love, time, beauty and mortality, to famed Chilean poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda.

  •      Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.- Aristotle
  •        My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep; the more I give to thee, The more I have, for both are infinite.- William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
  •        Age does not protect you from love. But love, to some extent, protects you from age.- Anais Nin
  •       The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.-Helen Keller
  •      I  love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride; so I love you because I know no other way than this: where I does not exist nor you, so close that your hand on my chest is my hand, so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.- Pablo Neruda, “Love Sonnet XVII”

#14 Phone Your Friend!

Hi my dearies! Do you have time for a little grammar today? If you do, go on reading!
Do we meet our friends? or Do we meet with our friends? Which of the two sentences is right? The FIRST sentence is right and the second is a common mistake! Remember: meet sb, marry sb, discuss sth. phone sb. We say: play the guitar, climb a tree, drive a car, ride a horse, answer a question. These verbs are followed by a person or an object but there is NO preposition in between.
If you think of Ukrainian equivalents to these verb phrases, you will see that in our language they share the following pattern verb+preposition+noun. In English it is verb+noun (no preposition). In grammar, this phenomenon is called direct object (no preposition is needed).
For example,
  • My boyfriend plays the guitar. (NOT My boyfriend plays on the guitar.)
  • My boyfriend is going to marry me! (NOT My boyfriend is going to marry with me!)
  • I have to phone my friend. (Not I have to phone to my friend.)
So WHY do English students make these mistakes? They usually translate a Ukrainian sentence word for word. The problem is that English is quite a different language and our language structures don`t work here:) So you have to develop a habit of  THINKING in English:) This is not easy, of course. But the more you work with English, the more you understand how this language works!
To brighten up the boring rules here watch this FUNNY VIDEO about kids riding horses. Every person looks so happy here! Enjoy the video, remember about direct objects and phone your friend!

Street Illusions

Street artists really know how to interest people. One of the street artists Julian Beaver year after year creats extraordinary and beautiful optical illusions. He draws pictures on pavements. They look very realistic at a certain angle.

Commissioned by Skrapan shopping gallery Erik Johansson painted this amazing picture on the street of Stockholm.  From the right angle, people are tricked into thinking that they are standing on top of the tallest building in Stockholm.

A holiday report!
I went to vienna last August with me sister Lilya. We stayed for a three days in a small hotel, it was nice. During the day we walked around the city. I and my sister took a lot of photos on the background of the most interesting places. Also, we went in the garden of Rose. Most of the time we spent in the city center. In my opinion, Vienna has a special atmosphere for those who love art and old building.
